In March 2007, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) under the leadership of Dr. Christiana Thorpe, registered over 2.6 million voters, accounting for 91% of the estimated voting population.

Voters in Sierra Leone went to the polls on the 11th August to elect a new president and members of Parliament.

However, no candidate got the required 55% of the total vote cast as stated in the Constitution of Sierra Leone which led to a run-off between Ernest Bai Koroma of the All People's Congress (APC) and Solomon Ekuma Berewa of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP). The run-off took place on the 8th September with APC Ernest Bai Koroma scoring 950,407 and SLPP Solomon Ekuma Berewa scoring 789,651 of the valid votes cast respectively. Ernest Bai Koroma being the winner is the new President of Sierra Leone. Click here for the run-off results summary.

The elections were monitored by observers from European Union (EU), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), National Elections Watch (NEW), Council of Churches in Sierra Leone (CCSL) and the US based National Democratic Institute (NDI). The elections were free, fair and credible.
