SIERRA LEONE ADULT EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (SLADEA)

WHAT IS SLADEA?

SLADEA (Sierra Leone Adult Education Association) is an NGO established as a membership organisation in September 1978. To draw attention to facilitate Adult Education is SLADEA’s major strength for national development and progress. Through suitable programmes SLADEA facilitates functional literacy and skills training and promotes critical civic awareness, peace building and Human Rights.

MISSION STATEMENT

• To reduce the high rate of illiteracy among adults in the non-formal sector throughout Sierra Leone.

• To enlist the co-operation and support of other NGO’s with a view to motivating various forms of people’s participation especially women and youths in national development

• To achieve public recognition and support for non-formal education sector

OBJECTIVES

• To promote and support adult education in all its forms through the formation of adult education branches , groups and classes nation-wide.

• To study and conduct research into the problems and challenges of adult education in Sierra Leone .

• To provide training and leadership development of Sierra Leonean Adult Educators to enhance their performance.

• To develop and employ appropriate means to effect adequate representation of women’s needs , problems with view to improving their participation in national development and the democratic process.

• To provide facilities and opportunities for adult educators to meet and share ideas through workshops , conferences and seminars.

• To publish periodic reports on activities and special studies undertaken by the Association.

• To develop a viable economic base in response to the growing needs of the Association.

• To serve as a pressure group in collaboration with other NGOs for the promotion of the non-forma sector. SLADEA is member of the Basic Education Commission and stresses the need for adequate support for non-formal education.
