FRENCH COOPERATION

The French Government gave assistance to Sierra Leone in the immediate post-conflict period, as decided by a Ministerial decision taken on 20th December 2001. This support was aimed at facilitating reconciliation in rural communities on the basis of improved living standards and renewed economic activity in the two districts of Kono and Kailahun.

In a general way, it can be said that the condition for a sustainable peace in Sierra Leone – and probably in the whole region – include notably:

  • a reduction of imbalance in economic and social development between the capital and the interior of the country

  • an in-depth reconciliation of the communities

  • Therefore, the intention of the support is to create the right conditions for sustainable development in economic, social and environmental terms in theses communities, which have been affected by war and then the return of refugees, displaced persons and ex-combatants.

The French government did not disburse any funds to Sierra Leone in 2006 and has not expressed a commitment to assistance in 2007 and following years, although their assistance towards peace-building in the immediate conflict period was gratefully received.
