Mission Statement of the Department

The Sierra Leone Prison Service as an adjunct of the Criminal Justice System of Sierra Leone , contributes to the maintenance of internal security by maintaining an efficient, humane and safe reformatory penal system operated within the laws of Sierra Leone . We believe in humanity, vigilance, fortitude and integrity while helping in the social reintegration of ex-convicts into society.

The growth of the Department

The growth of the Sierra Leone prisons Department has hampered by the ten-years Rebel War that devastated most of our infrastructures, workshops , even paralysed the effort of Prison Personnel. But with the intervention of UNDP/DIFD/JSDP and NGO’s we are regaining momentum which has been lost for the past ten years on the area of construction, reconstruction and rehabilitations , as updated below from 2007 March ,2008.
