The rationale for creating the Commission was the need for an
independent body to engineer the attitudinal transformation so badly
required in the people of conflict-torn Sierra Leone for the
promotion of democracy, good governance, patriotism, national
development and the exercise of civic rights and responsibilities.
Through an Act of Parliament No. 3 of 1996, the democratically elected
government that succeeded the military regime expanded the mandate of
the Commission to include human rights. Correspondingly, the name of
the Commission was changed to National Commission for Democracy and
Human Rights.
Mission Statement
To
create an enlightened, peaceful, democratic and just society in which
the citizens are empowered to enjoy their civic and human rights and
discharge their responsibilities with the attitude desirable for
national unity ad development.
