The mission of the Ministry is to provide safe, reliable and affordable transport and communications modes with the twin objectives of expediting economic recovery and alleviating poverty.

Structure of the Ministry

Administrative wise, the Permanent Secretary is the head of the Ministry and provides policy advice, enhance sectoral collaboration with relevant Government Ministries and National and International Organisations/Institutions, promotes the expansion of transport, Postal and Telecommunications network nationwide, and the overall supervision of finance and personnel management issues within the ministry. A Minister and a deputy Minister lead the Ministry.   

The transport sector, the ministry’s policy guidelines and regulatory role covers the programmes and activities of the following institutions:

  • The Sierra Leone Maritime Administration
  •  The Sierra Leone Port Authority
  • The Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority
  • The Sierra Leone Road Transport Corporation
  • The Civil Aviation Department
  • The Metrological Department
  • The Transport Sector Support unit 

The Telecommunication Sector, the ministry plays a similar role in the provision of a policy framework and guidelines for the regulation of the sector and its related programmes. Its supervisory role covers institutions like Sierratel and SALPOST.  

Objectives of the Ministry

The Ministry provides overall policy initiation, direction and regulation for the transport as well as the communication sector in the country.  It is worth noting that the establishment of the National Commission for Privatization (NCP) has resulted in a complete reorientation of the activities of the Ministry.
