Structure of the Ministry

The Ministry strives to realize its mission under the following four programmes:

  1. The Office of the Permanent Secretary;
  2. The Water Supply Division (WSD);
  3. The Radiation Protection Unit; and
  4. The National Energy & Water Policy, Planning, and Coordination Unit (NEWPPCU)

Utilities, companies and projects within the purview of the Ministry include:

  1. The National Power Authority (NPA)/Bo-Kenema Power Services (BKPS);

  2. The Guma Valley Water Company (GVWC);

  3. The Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO); and

  4. The Bumbuna Hydroelectric Project (BHP)

Short-term Goals of the Ministry

  • To improve the electricity generating capacity in the Western Area

  • To reduce technical losses in the transmission/distribution network in the Western Area

  • To improve upon the overall revenue collection by NPA

  • To expand access to electrical power in the Bo-Kenema region

  • To restore electricity supply to district headquarter towns outside the Bo-Kenema region

  • To complete Phase I of the Bumbuna Hydro Project – 50 MW (rainy season)/18 MW (dry season)

  • To expand access to wells and latrines in rural areas

  • To improve access to potable water in Bo, Kenema, Makeni, Koidu/Yegema and Lungi - SALWACO’s specified areas of operation
